We often go along over the years and don’t think about the where or when things happened and why. History truly is something that all of us should pay more attention too. In this case, it was 40 years ago that the IHRA (International Hot Rod Association) was formed. Larry Carrier vision brought drag racing’s first sanctioning body sponsorship (RJ Reynolds), long before the NHRA did it. From Billy Meyer to Bill Bader and now Feld Entertainment, the people running the organization have been cutting edge.
They are truly an international racing group with at least three races every year in Canada. Every major driver over the last four decades has run in the IHRA and of note, Ronnie Martin was its first Top Fuel Champion.
So here’s to keeping alive an association that has been, if nothing else, a prod to NHRA to stay ahead, while keeping drag racing fresh and the most exiting sport there is. Congratulations IHRA and let’s hope your around another 40 years.
